Company Overview

Spielmaker Cabinets & Countertops is located in Burton, Michigan and has been a family-owned and operated business for almost 90 years.

Are you familiar with the Good Housekeeping Seal?

Historically, the Good Housekeeping Seal involved a chain of home improvement companies that sold specific appliances. Managed by Joe Spielmaker, the business actually began as the Flint Good Housekeeping Shop.

He eventually took over ownership and added some home improvement items that complimented the line of appliances, like linoleum countertops and floor coverings, carpeting, and plumbing products such as sinks and faucets.

After Joe Spielmaker died at the age of 58, management of the business was passed to his two sons, Joseph Jr. and Jim. After Joe Spielmaker Jr. died of cancer at the age of 38, Jim was left to take the reins.

After Formica plastic laminates became more popular in the late 1940s, Jim transformed the business to focus solely on fabrication and installation of countertops to meet the wildfire growth of the suburbs in the Flint area. In 1968, Jim relocated the business and changed its name to The Formica Shop, which was extremely successful.

Recognizing the fact that the family had been doing business in the Genesee County area for three generations, Jim decided to add the family name to the name of the business in the late 1970s. The name was therefore changed to The Formica Shop Spielmakers 3rd Generation Inc., as it was incorporated in the late 1980s.

Jim’s son, Tom, joined the family business in 1978 and has been involved in every aspect since. Jim retired in the late 1970s, and the business was run by a succession of sons until Tom took over in 1988.

Today, the cabinet company is known as Spielmaker Cabinets & Countertops, and it remains a family-run business located in Michigan. Tom Spielmaker remains very proud to carry on his father’s and grandfather’s legacy, and he strives to make customers feel like a part of the family as well.

Our Team

TOM SPIELMAKER

OWNER, CABINET SALES

Started in the business in 1977 on the very ground floor, which means cleaning, delivering, and any other menial grunt work, the older brothers could find for him. Eventually he worked his way into the fabrication and installation of countertops. In late 1980s Tom made his way into sales and then partnered with his brother to run the day-to-day operation. After a few years, Tom’s brother left in the early 1990s to pursue other interests and Tom was left to operate the company on his own and continues to do so today.

MARY SPIELMAKER

SALES & DESIGN

Mary is somewhat new to the business. Although she has been a part of it on a smaller scale for the past 10 years she has become an integral part of the cabinet design side and is now involved in the design and layout of most of our kitchen renderings. Our clients greatly appreciate what she is able to bring to the table with her knowledgeable advise on color, textures, and trends. In this way, our customers get an opportunity to receive both a male and female representation of their plan. She also produces all of the beautifully crafted CAD perspective drawings for our cabinet clients.

TIM THOMPSON

FABRICATION & INSTALLATION OF CABINETS & COUNTERTOPS

Tim has been fabricating and installing cabinets and counter tops since the early 1980s. Today, he continues to fabricate and install cabinets as well as helping with sales. We don’t believe there is currently anyone in the area with more experience on the manufacturing side of kitchen remodeling.
